Tutu, Celebrities Plan Benefit for South Africa

Stevie Wonder, Joan Baez, BeBe Winans, Hugh Masekela and Lebo M (“The Lion King”) will perform at “Jabulani! Freedom Rising,” a May 24 South African benefit at the Wiltern Theatre.
Nobel laureate and South African Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu is the event’s keynote speaker and guest of honor; additional scheduled celebrity participants include Ted Danson, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Robert Guillaume, Samuel L. Jackson, Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington and Alfre Woodard.
Event co-chairs include Harry Belafonte, Benjamin Bratt, Jonathan Demme, Morgan Freeman, Danny Glover, Quincy Jones, Dave Matthews and Cicely Tyson.
Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. event, to be directed by Sheldon Epps, are $37.50 and $55, with special Golden Circle seats (including a reception) available for $125 and up.
Proceeds will go to the Desmond Tutu Peace Trust and Artists for a New South Africa, the latter of which was founded by Woodard, Glover and others in 1989 to promote equality and opportunity in South Africa. The May 24 event celebrates the group’s 10th anniversary.
