For Cryin’ Out Loud

I read with interest and dismay the Weekend Escape to Paso Robles (“Grapes and Gurgles,” Oct. 24). A weekend at the Arbor Inn, a cozy B&B;, cannot be romantic, except maybe for the parents, when a 1-year-old tags along.
Don’t take me wrong: I don’t dislike kids. In fact, I have some, and we take them to appropriate family destinations, not B&Bs.;
It’s inexcusable for author Patrick Goldstein to subject his baby to other inn guests as well as the local wineries. He may enjoy the experience of his baby “getting you up early for morning strolls,” but getting awakened by a crying infant in the room next to me is not my idea of a good time. A tasting room is for adults, period.
I would hope that the Arbor Inn would warn potential customers that their romantic escape may be interrupted at any time due to selfish parents.

Paso Robles is one of my favorite weekend destinations. I love sampling chardonnay and zinfandel at the wineries and dining at McPhee’s Grill nearby. But can one really drive the 230 miles from Los Angeles to Paso Robles in “only three hours”? A stop at the James Dean memorial on California 46 might be a needed reminder to slow down.
