RioPort, the San Jose company that develops technology for playing music on the Internet, is expected to announce today that it has raised $30 million in venture capital as it begins operations as an independent company. RioPort, formerly a unit of San Jose-based Diamond Multimedia Systems and its parent company, Santa Clara-based S3, received investments from Vulcan Ventures and Oak Investment Partners. The company said it plans to use the money for application software development and design and to fund Internet and content aggregation activities. RioPort is also expected to announce that it has finalized a multiyear deal to sell digitally downloadable music on Web sites operated by MTV Networks Online, which will take an equity stake in RioPort.
