Tom Campbell

So Rep. Tom Campbell (R-San Jose) intends to run for Senate to replace Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) (Oct. 26). The moderate Campbell could be a fine senator in the mold of the late Sen. John Chafee, more concerned with the greater good of the nation than partisan politics. However, replacing a Democratic senator with a Republican one only ensures the continued power of the disastrously partisan and hopelessly backward Republican leadership of Trent Lott, Orrin Hatch and (shiver) Jesse Helms.
Sorry, Rep. Campbell, but at the state level we can no longer afford the luxury of electing a moderate individual of intelligence and integrity, because at the national level we would be perpetuating the power of these men in control of the nation’s welfare.
