Greek Official Dies When Jet Plummets

Greece’s deputy foreign minister, Yiannos Kranidiotis, was among six people killed when the executive jet in which they were flying hit heavy turbulence and plummeted 19,000 feet before leveling off, the Greek Press Ministry said. Seven others aboard the jet, which was flying in Romanian airspace, were injured. The pilot and co-pilot were able to land the government-owned Falcon jet in Bucharest, the Romanian capital. The cause of the deaths wasn’t immediately clear, but those killed apparently were not strapped into their seats. Greek journalist Alfonso Vitalis, who was on board, told Greek state television that Kranidiotis was standing and briefing reporters when the plane suddenly lost altitude while flying at 23,000 feet.
