Boy Wins Zoo Contest to Name Baby Chimp

LOS ANGELES — After sifting through more than 1,000 suggestions from children throughout Southern California, the Los Angeles Zoo has finally decided on a name for its 3-month-old chimp: Jake.
The winning entry was submitted by 10-year-old Miguel Guzman of Compton, who appeared at a news conference Thursday with zoo Director Manuel A. Mollinedo. “I never thought I would win,” Miguel said.
He was awarded a gift basket that included a chimpanzee doll, and zoo officials promised to give him and his family a behind-the-scenes tour of the zoo’s “Chimpanzees of Mahale Mountains” exhibit.
