Houston, We Have Six Touchdowns

TIMES STAFF WRITER

Deshai Houston’s Flying Circus touched down at Huntington Beach High Friday night, this time running rings around Garden Grove.

Houston, Ocean View’s senior quarterback, passed for four touchdowns, ran for one and returned an interception for another score, leading the Seahawks to a 46-20 victory over the Argonauts before about 850 spectators.

Houston completed 14 of 25 passes for 248 yards, including touchdown throws to Luka Levu (18 and three yards), Brett Crevda (11 yards) and Phillip Smith (51 yards). Houston also scored on a 29-yard run and a 29-yard interception return.

Counting his 17-of-21, 376-yard, six-touchdown performance in last week’s 48-22 victory over Twentynine Palms, the 6-foot-1 left-hander has been responsible for 12 of his team’s 14 touchdowns during Ocean View’s 2-0 start.

“Do you like salt or do you like sugar?” Ocean View Coach Harold Eggers said. “He’s sugar.”

“We expect to put points on the board,” Houston said of the Seahawks’ 47-points-per-game average.

“I don’t think anyone can stop us,” added wide receiver Patrick Campbell, who caught seven passes for 144 yards.

The Argonauts (1-1) actually led, 7-6, midway through the second quarter before being done in by Ocean View’s vertical passing game and their own vertical punting game.

Sione Taumofoelau, the Garden Grove punter, got excellent height but little distance on three consecutive kicks, which traveled only 10, 10 and seven yards.

Those short punts gave Ocean View the ball at the Garden Grove 45-, 35- and 43-yard lines, and the Seahawks used the field position to score three unanswered touchdowns for a 27-7 lead.
