Charges were filed Tuesday against an El Toro High School math teacher and longtime wrestling coach after the FBI said he used the Internet to arrange a meeting with a person he thought was a 13-year-old girl for sex at a West Los Angeles shopping mall.
Enoch “Jerry” Jarrett is charged with one count of an attempted lewd act on a child under 14, six counts of attempting to send harmful matter to a minor over the Internet and one count of attempting to send harmful matter to a minor via telephone. The Internet and telephone charges are for a child under age 18, Los Angeles County Deputy Dist. Atty. Wendy Seagall said.
Jarrett, 50, was arrested last week by the FBI’s Sex Assault Felony Enforcement team, whose agents work undercover in Internet chat rooms, FBI spokeswoman Cheryl Mimura said. The SAFE team’s primary focus is child pornography and other crimes against children.
Neither Mimura nor Seagall would say where Jarrett was arrested. He was arrested Thursday and released on a $50,000 bond the next day.
He is to be arraigned Oct. 7 in West Los Angeles Municipal Court.
Officials at Saddleback Valley Unified School District declined to comment on the arrest. At El Toro High School, many students expressed disbelief.
Senior T.J. Monge has been coached by Jarrett on the wrestling team since he was a freshman.
“He was a great guy,” he said. “I definitely looked up to him--I still do.” Monge said he was shocked when he heard about the arrest and said he didn’t believe the charges: “There’s no way he did that.”
A coaching colleague also was stunned by news of the arrest.
“I’ve known him for years, and it comes as a total shock,” said Gary deBeaubien, former coach at Santa Ana College. “I just think he’s a real nice, quiet type of coach--a good family guy.”
El Toro High Principal Jack Clement said he wants to protect students from the events. “They’re here to get an education,” Clement said.
Jarrett, who is married and has four sons, is the second faculty member from the school to face charges of lewd behavior with a minor. He could not be reached for comment.
The district attorney’s office is seeking a second trial against former El Toro High School track coach Vernon Smith, who allegedly fondled female athletes.
A jury deadlocked in December on all 11 counts against Smith.
