Milton Brutten; Expert on Dyslexia

Milton Brutten, 77, an expert on dyslexia who founded one of the nation’s first private schools for children with learning disabilities. In 1960, along with educator Henry Evans, Brutten co-founded the Vanguard School in Paoli, Pa., after he found many families unable to obtain appropriate educational services and placement for their children. In 1977, Brutten founded the Crossroad School for dyslexic students, also in suburban Philadelphia. A clinical psychologist and early leader in the field of special education, Brutten helped write one of the most significant books of its time on learning disabilities, “Something’s Wrong With My Child.” Coauthors of the book, published in 1973, were Charles Mangel and Dr. Sylvia Richardson. Over the years Brutten served on the boards of many professional organizations and taught at Bryn Mawr College and Temple University. He also maintained a private practice until his retirement three years ago. On March 16 in Devon, Pa., of complications from a stroke.
