Unfair Swipe at Davis

F. Kathleen Foley states that Linda Purl’s performance as Regina “erases the unfortunate memory of Bette Davis’ 1941 film performance” (“First-Rate Cast Captures the Essence of ‘Little Foxes,’ ” April 12).
It is true that in the latter stages of her career Davis became a grotesque parody of what she had once been, but when the time was right, and in 1941 it was right indeed, she gave two or three of the most memorable performances an American actress has given in front of the camera.
It was an arbitrary and unnecessary swipe at someone whose place in our cinema’s history is thankfully secure.
