Safeway Inc. said it named former McGraw-Hill Cos. executive Vasant Prabhu chief financial officer, replacing David Weed. Weed is leaving to spend more time with his family and family business, the Pleasanton, Calif.-based supermarket chain said. Prabhu had been president of McGraw-Hill’s information and media group since 1998. New York-based McGraw-Hill is one of the world’s biggest educational publishers. Prabhu will oversee information technology and legal duties at Safeway, taking over from Kenneth Oder, and lead the company’s Internet business. Oder will assume a part-time position with Safeway, consulting on labor, human resources and law. Safeway operates 1,665 stores in the U.S. and Canada. Safeway shares dipped 56 cents to close at $50.13 on the NYSE.
