GUATEMALA CITY — Guatemalan police arrested a military man and his son Friday in connection with the killing of human rights activist Bishop Juan Jose Gerardi in April 1998, shortly after the cleric published a report blaming the army for many war atrocities.
Police said retired Col. Disrael Lima Estrada, 58, and Capt. Byron Lima Oliva, 30, were being held in connection with the brutal slaying.
Police had also arrested an elderly woman who worked as a cook in the house where Gerardi lived.
