A driver suspected of being intoxicated headed the wrong way on Interstate 5 early Thursday, crashing into a minivan and killing a Laguna Niguel man, police said.
The accident happened about 2:25 a.m. in the southbound carpool lane, when Vicente Diaz Dominguez, 22, of Anaheim steered his 1990 Ford Thunderbird the wrong way south of Lake Forest Drive, CHP Officer Mark Reeves said.
The car struck a 1996 Ford Windstar minivan driven by Young Jin Ro, 36, of Los Angeles. Byoung “Brian” Kim, 47, a passenger in the minivan, was thrown from the vehicle and fatally injured. Reeves said he did not know whether the victim was wearing a seat belt.
Both Dominguez and Ro were injured in the crash and were treated at a local hospital. Later Dominguez was booked into Orange County Jail on suspicion of manslaughter and drunk driving.
