Seal Beach Surfer Wins Semifinal

Chad Wells of Seal Beach won his semifinal heat Tuesday in the explorer masters 15-and-over division on the first day of the National Scholastic Surfing Assn. Nationals at Lower Trestles.
Wells scored 23 points on the best-of-30 scale, edging Joe McNulty (21.5) and Greg Browning (19).
Killian Garland of Santa Barbara scored 23 points to take round one of the 12-and-under division.
