The city and the county are looking for more efficient ways to dispose of trash.
The most frequently discussed method to save land and money is using large, self-contained capsules--placed in landfill cells--to store trash in a more compact fashion, said City Councilman John Greiner, the chairman of the Orange County Waste Commission, which is composed of city council members and residents from across the county.
The waste commission discussed this option and others at its meeting last month.
Ray Hull, a spokesman for the Orange County Intergraded Waste Management Department, said the county’s three landfills, one of which is off La Pata Road in San Juan Capistrano, are expected to reach capacity by 2040.
