La Jolla is one of the nicest vacation spots close to L.A.--a good place to go to if you want to get away for the weekend. There are great restaurants (Piatti has the best warm chocolate cake) and great shopping.

DISCOVERY: The beaches are gorgeous, and the water is clear and shallow. You can walk really far out in the water and not be afraid of sharks. My friends [including Sara McKenzie-Smith, left, in photo below] and I brought our boogie boards and went swimming. I’ve never been to Hawaii, but my mom said it was just like it.
