City Delays Vote on Joint-Use Plan

City Council members have postponed until January a vote on a controversial plan to build a five-story apartment and office building at Whiting and Chapman avenues.

The council voted last week to continue a public hearing on the matter until Jan. 16 to seek more information on parking proposed for the project. The plan calls for about 1,700 square feet of commercial space and 83 apartment units in the building, with a parking structure underneath.

Area residents are concerned about the potential for noise, traffic and parking problems.

City staffers had recommended approval of the two-acre project, but some council members were concerned there would not be adequate parking at the site, particularly during construction.
