OUTLOOK
The defending league champion is favored to repeat. League MVP Arguello, the Spartans’ all-purpose player, returns. Arguello started at wide receiver, defensive back and also was the team’s kick returner, punter and kicker. He caught 51 passes for 821 yards, intercepted six passes, scored nine touchdowns, and kicked five field goals last season. And Arguello has someone to get him the ball--Jackson, a first-team all-league quarterback who is entering his third season as the starter. Jackson completed 60% of his passes for 1,411 yards and 10 touchdowns with only three interceptions last season. The Spartans will have to find a way to replace Marquis Colvin, who rushed for 2,139 yards and scored 32 touchdowns, with Campos leading the list of hopefuls. But Mahoney knows the importance of his offensive line, which only returns one starter in Hairston. That unit must develop for the team to succeed. “We have some weapons,” Mahoney said. First-team all-leaguer Sanford, Colacchio and Aguilar lead the defense.
