BEIJING — Spraying bullets and driving over anyone in their path, four masked men toting automatic weapons killed seven people and injured five others as they escaped empty-handed from a botched bank robbery in southern China, state media said Sunday.
More than 1,000 police and paramilitary officers were combing the city of Changde, in Hunan province, for the assailants, whom investigators believe may be linked to other violent robberies.
The mayhem began Friday, when the gunmen tried to intercept a cash transfer between an armored car and a bank branch.
During the botched robbery and subsequent getaway, they killed a bank teller, a college intern, three guards, a taxi driver and a bicyclist.
