Sylmar, Livingston Not Up to Speed

Sylmar High will have enough trouble keeping up with speedy Dorsey in an opener Friday. Doing so without fifth-year senior Donnell Livingston makes the job even tougher.

Livingston, a defensive back who had six interceptions last season, also will play running back. But not for two weeks.

City officials awarded Livingston an additional semester of eligibility because he missed much of the fall 1998 semester because of an arm injury, has not graduated and will not turn 19 until next August.

However, he must sit out the first two games because he played in the first two games in ’98.

“He’s one of our better players and it’s unfortunate he can’t play against Dorsey,” Coach Jeff Engilman said. “But it’s great he was able to gain back a year of eligibility.”

Livingston also will miss a game against Pasadena before suiting up against El Camino Real on Sept. 22.

They have co-coaches, Lee Jackson and Bobby Mesa. They plan to employ a tailback by committee--senior Alex Green and juniors Marlin Goode and Andrew Sotelo.

“They are all different,” Jackson said. “Goode is extremely fast, if he can turn the corner he’s gone. Alex Green is a returning wide receiver who is tall and lanky. We call him the galloping ghost. Sotelo has good speed, but most of all his’s a good hard runner.”

“We’ll start with a combination of the three and are looking for one to come to the forefront.”
