The South Korean women, who set a team world record the day before, moved smoothly into the final 16 of the individual tournament while one American eliminated another.
Karen Scavotto, an 18-year-old from Enfield, Conn., defeated 27-year-old Denise Parker of Salt Lake City, 162-152, to advance. Scavotto continued on with a comeback victory over Cuba’s Yaremis Perez Ruiz, 158-155.
