Judge Delays Orange Ballot Ruling Again

A Superior Court judge Friday delayed ruling for a second day on whether to remove two advisory measures from a June ballot that also includes recall votes on three Orange school trustees.
Judge Francisco Firmat, postponing his ruling until Monday, asked Orange Recall Committee attorney Pamela Moore to submit more specific information that would support the committee’s claim that the measures violate the 1st Amendment and equal-protection guarantees.
The measures ask voters whether they agree with the school board’s policy of increasing teacher salaries without raising property taxes, and whether voters agree that the district should continue back-to-basics and strict academic standard reforms.
Supporters of the recall effort against board members Linda Davis, Maureen Aschoff and Martin Jacobson contend that the measures, added to the June 26 ballot by the school board, are an effort to sway voters and undermine the recall.
Firmat was originally scheduled to rule Thursday.
