State lawmakers voted to override the governor’s budget veto as nearly 1,000 income tax opponents and tax reform advocates demonstrated outside the Capitol.
The House voted first, 66-33, followed by the Senate, 19-12.
“I felt that with this budget the teachers, state employees and higher education employees got a pay increase,” House Speaker Jimmy Naifeh said.
Gov. Don Sundquist vetoed the $19.6-billion budget last month.
