Re “Farmers Fume as State Goes Against the Grain,” Aug. 20: To our friends in the Midwest who want California to buy ethanol as a gas supplement and solve the twofold problem of finding a replacement for the soon-to-be-phased-out gas additive MTBE and helping to boost the Midwest corn economy with ethanol:
Well, guys, you’ll have to understand our skepticism of relying on a potential market-cornering business agreement. You see, we are still reeling from some of our other U.S.-based companies that would turn out all our lights. We would love to help, but the free market system is best. Now, throw in a few thousand megawatts of power and maybe we can make a deal.
