Nearly 700 employees at hospitals in Oxnard and Camarillo have voted to join the Service Employees International Union, officials said Monday.
The employees work at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard and St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital in Camarillo. Included are vocational nurses, respiratory care therapists, lab technicians, nursing assistants, food service workers and housekeeping personnel.
The new union members, who voted 374 to 174 during a two-day election held last week, join 550 registered nurses at both hospitals who unionized about two years ago, said Steve Trossman, a union spokesman.
Employees said they voted to unionize in order to improve staffing levels and patient care.
