UC Riverside 71, UC Santa Cruz 64--Vili Morton scored 10 of his 15 points on dunks and had seven rebounds to lead the Highlanders (2-5) to the victory at Riverside over the Banana Slugs (1-5).
Mark Miller and Ted Bell each had 10 points for UC Riverside, which was without leading scorer Lloyd Cook, who was sidelined because of a sprained ankle.
The Banana Slugs’ Jimmy Darr was the game’s top scorer with 17 points, and teammate Jesse Senestraro had 16 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Santa Cruz (1-6), which plays in the NAIA, made seven three-pointers and was 15 of 20 from the free-throw line.
The Highlanders led by as many as 21 points in the first half and were up 44-25 at halftime.
In the second half, the Banana Slugs hit four three-pointers and 13 of 17 free throws in narrowing the gap to as little as six points, but that was as close as they got.
