Compromise Ends Crisis in Tabasco

One of two rival governors for Tabasco stepped aside as a federally mediated compromise eased a political crisis in the Mexican Gulf Coast state. “I decline my aspirations to lead the interim government of Tabasco,” Adan Augusto Lopez said after political leaders meeting in Mexico City agreed to recognize his rival, Enrique Priego. The compromise also calls for a Nov. 11 election to choose a new governor. It ended a deadlock that arose Dec. 29 when Mexico’s top electoral court rejected an October gubernatorial election because of irregularities by the state’s ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party.
