Support Shown for Creating Charter School

A proposed Northridge charter school primarily for students with learning and physical disabilities moved a step closer to approval Tuesday. At a public hearing, the Los Angeles Board of Education heard nothing but support for the school’s creation.
“We celebrate differences and we build upon every child’s strength,” said Claire Cavallaro, chairwoman of Cal State Northridge’s special education department. She would be the school’s director.
Charter schools receive funding from the districts that establish them, but the schools have broad autonomy to operate.
The CHIME school would educate students with special needs as well as those without such disabilities. It also would serve as a training center for Cal State Northridge education majors.
The board is scheduled to decide at its July 24 meeting whether to approve the school’s creation.
