Pettitte Expects to Start

A day after leaving a game because of a tight left groin, Andy Pettitte said he expected to make his next scheduled start for the New York Yankees.

Pettitte came out of the Yankees’ 7-4 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Friday night in the sixth inning. He said he would do his between-starts throwing Tuesday.

“Just a little tightness,” he said. “If I have no problems Tuesday, I’ll be thumbs up for Thursday.”

Tony Fernandez, who was released by the Milwaukee Brewers last month and signed a minor league contract with Toronto on Friday, said he will retire at the end of this season. . . . The Kansas City Royals put outfielder Mark Quinn on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left hamstring. . . . The Milwaukee Brewers put outfielder Jeffrey Hammonds on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right shoulder. The move is retroactive to Thursday. . . . The Oakland Athletics activated outfielder Jeremy Giambi from the 15-day disabled list.
