Supervisors to Consider Surcharge on Flights

Ventura County supervisors on Tuesday will consider adding a $4.50-per-ticket surcharge on commercial flights out of Oxnard Airport.
The fee would raise an estimated $908,261 through 2007, money needed to repave runways, update the airport’s master plan and conduct a noise study, said Scott E. Smith, director of airports.
If approved, average round-trip fares to Los Angeles would rise from $99 to $103.50, a 4.5% increase, and round-trip fares to Phoenix would rise from $135 to $139.50, a 3.3% hike.
The two airlines providing service--Phoenix-based Mesa Airlines and United Express--have indicated support for the plan.
