Trial Ordered in Bribery Case Linked to Premier

An appeals court ordered a former Italian defense minister to stand trial on charges of helping Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi bribe a judge. The court refused to allow charges against Berlusconi.
Cesare Previti will be tried with two other men on charges that they were go-betweens for Berlusconi and the judge during a battle for control of Italy’s largest publishing company. The judge also was ordered to stand trial.
Previti served as defense minister for several months in Berlusconi’s short-lived 1994 government. The alleged bribery occurred in 1991.
