Matthew Pierce Jr. of San Juan Capistrano has become one of the youngest qualifiers for the U.S. Junior Amateur golf championship.
The only other 12-year-olds to qualify were Verner Stanley in 1952 and Kevin Na in 1996. Jack Nicklaus was 13 and Tiger Woods was 14 when they first qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur.
Pierce, who turned 12 on May 9, shot seven-under-par 137 for 36 holes Thursday at Warner Springs Ranch.
Other local qualifiers were Brandon Hillpot of Colton, Nicholas Wilkins of Loma Linda and Henry Liaw of Rowland Heights.
