Same Old Story for Spangenberg

The old man of junior college track, Brian Spangenberg, is not slowing down.

Spangenberg, 36, set a College of the Canyons record of 31:48.4 in winning the 10,000 meters at the Santa Barbara Relays on Saturday.

He improved on the record 32:01 he ran last year.

Spangenberg enrolled at Canyons in 1999 after discovering the school had a business- and computer-related curriculum that would help him in his job with a medical supply company in Northridge.

The Cougars also set a school record of 41.95 with a second-place finish in the men’s 400 relay. Marquis Brignac, Ontae Chaney, Julian Linear and Andre McIntosh broke the mark of 42.00 established in 1999.

Antelope Valley College’s softball team is on a seven-game tear after defeating Mt. San Jacinto, 16-3, in a Foothill Conference game Wednesday.

The Marauders (15-4, 7-0 in conference) face a big challenge on Friday when they host Chaffey.

Before Wednesday’s game against Victor Valley, the Panthers were 19-6, 6-0, and in a first-place tie with Antelope Valley.

Antelope Valley’s last loss came against Long Beach City, 4-3, on March 11 in the Golden West tournament. The Marauders get a chance to avenge the defeat when they meet the Vikings on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in the Ventura tournament.

Marciea Ball, who is 10-2 with a 1.33 earned-run average, is Antelope Valley’s ace.
