Philanthropist Lucille Beeson has left an estate of more than $150 million to 13 Birmingham charities and nonprofit groups.
The gift is believed to be one of the nation’s largest individual bequests in recent years.
The fund’s annual earnings will pay for new or expanded programs for beneficiaries.
“Her gift will have this huge ripple effect, and it’s going to last forever,” said local philanthropist and businessman Richard Scrushy.
Beeson, a lawyer and philanthropist, died in January at age 95.
