ROCKFORD, Ill. — A woman who allegedly began shoplifting after trying to buy bullets at a Wal-Mart store pulled a gun from her pants and opened fire, wounding three employees, officials said Tuesday.
Laura Gassaway, 33, was then shot to death by police.
Police Sgt. Joe Westmoreland said Gassaway wanted to buy bullets but was turned down by employees because she did not have a state firearm owners ID card.
Officers fired a total of 21 shots after Gassaway refused to drop her weapon, officials said.
