Port Chosen by Navy for Carrier Reagan
The Navy has selected San Diego over Bremerton, Wash., to be the home port of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan, scheduled to be commissioned in 2003.
San Diego, the Navy’s largest West Coast port, is currently home to the carriers Constellation, John C. Stennis and Nimitz. The Reagan, under construction at Newport News, Va., will add 3,000 jobs and $226 million a year in payroll and other expenditures to the local economy.
Congressional delegations from Washington state and San Diego had lobbied the Navy on behalf of their competing areas.
