Calabasas Sophomore Upends the Top Seed

Calabasas High sophomore Monica Wiesener of Woodland Hills upset top-seeded Villa Park sophomore Lindsey Nelson of Orange, 7-6 (3), 6-3, to win the girls’ 18 division singles championship of the 16th annual J.P. Yamasaki Memorial tennis tournament Sunday at Ridgeline Country Club in Orange.
Wiesener also advanced to the division’s doubles final with Anaheim Canyon’s Tracy Lin, but the match was rained out.
Sergiu Modoc, a senior at Placentia El Dorado defeated Coto de Caza resident Garrett Snyder of Corona del Mar High, 6-3, 6-4, in the boys’ 18 title match.
Lin defeated Yelena Olshanskaya of Marlborough High, 6-3, 6-3, in the girls’ 16 final and Jonathon Sanchez of Fullerton beat Andrew Eklov of Manhattan Beach, 6-3, 7-5, for the boys’ 16 title.
