Question: Why do some people have “innie” belly buttons and others have “outies”?
Answer: It depends on how the obstetrician cuts the umbilical cord after birth. If the doctor makes a good cut and the remaining cord is short, it will usually shrink down to form the conventional “innie.”
But if the cord is left a little longer than normal, it usually will heal to form an “outie.”
The condition is not necessarily permanent. An “innie” can be turned into an “outie” by a pregnancy or hernia, which is why mothers have a higher percentage of “outies” than the population as a whole.
