America West Airlines pilots were among the first to get their pink slips as the company began laying off 2,000 employees.
The company announced the layoffs and a reduced schedule shortly after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The airline, a unit of America West Holdings, notified 115 pilots Friday and the number of furloughed pilots could climb to 200, a company spokesman said.
The Tempe, Ariz.-based airline was pulled from the brink of bankruptcy Sept. 21 when Congress approved $15 billion in relief for the airline industry.
