War and Work: Global Perspectives

Tonight’s programming has a distinct international flavor as PBS studies the global economy and “Nightline” examines a devastating conflict in the Congo.

First, a look at “Livelyhood,” which begins its third season tonight at 9 on KCET. Hosted by humorist Will Durst, this series tells the stories of America’s working people.

The two-part “Planet Work” goes on a global search for solutions to the “growing problems of a smaller world.” In the first hour, that subject yields a segment on co-workers who are half a world apart, in Utah and India.

At 10 p.m., one of the segments profiles an Asian American business consultant who often begins and ends her days in different countries while her husband handles the chores at home. In addition, the hour follows three Americans who set up the infrastructure for emerging businesses in Ghana.

On a more serious note, “Nightline” (11:35 p.m. ABC) presents “Heart of Darkness,” a five-part report on a conflict that has been called “the first African world war.” A tale of immense brutality, “Heart of Darkness” explores the fighting that has involved as many as seven nations since 1998, resulting in the displacement of thousands and the deaths of 2.5 million people. With roots in the genocide of Rwanda, the conflict has taken place in the name of power as well as control of the Congo’s natural resources.

After tonight’s overview, the report continues Tuesday through next Friday.
