Boston’s Everett Gets Another Suspension

Carl Everett was suspended for four games by the Boston Red Sox on Monday, the latest in a series of penalties against the outfielder, after he reported late to a workout the day before.
Everett reportedly argued with Manager Joe Kerrigan, who ordered him to leave when he arrived late. He also had several run-ins with Jimy Williams, who was fired as manager on Aug. 16.
Everett was suspended 10 games by baseball last season for bumping umpire Ron Kulpa and one game by the team this year in spring training for arriving late and missing the bus.
Then he arrived late Sunday.
Everett also was fined an undisclosed amount, but Boston General Manager Dan Duquette would not say whether the player argued with Kerrigan.

Cal Ripken will close his 21-year career with the Baltimore Orioles at home on Oct. 6 in a game rescheduled to avoid a conflict with the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens.
The Orioles and Boston Red Sox will finish up at Camden Yards on that Saturday, but other teams will end the regular season the next day.
The terrorist attacks in New York and Washington forced baseball to postpone six days’ worth of games.
The Orioles were worried they would have to finish the season on Oct. 7, which would have created a potential traffic jam around Camden Yards because of the Ravens’ afternoon game against the Tennessee Titans at PSINet Stadium.
If forced to hold their finale that Sunday, the Orioles probably couldn’t have started the game until 9 p.m.

The Montreal Expos rejected a proposal from the Colorado Rockies to move a four-game series from Olympic Stadium to Denver to help raise funds for victims of last week’s terrorist attacks.
Colorado owner Jerry McMorris, citing an “opportunity for some significant fund-raising,” proposed the idea to baseball Commissioner Bud Selig.
But a team spokesman said the Expos rejected the plan and instead would contribute money for the victims, although not necessarily from ticket revenue.
Tickets have already been sold for the series, which runs Thursday to Saturday and falls in the middle of a 10-game homestand for the Expos.
