Schilling Follows Suit, Shuts Down Padres, 9-0

PHOENIX — Right-hander Curt Schilling picked up where Randy Johnson left off by pitching seven scoreless innings and Damian Miller hit a grand slam Tuesday night as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the San Diego Padres, 9-0.

Schilling, 26-6 last season counting his 4-0 postseason mark, struck out nine, gave up six hits and didn’t walk a batter one night after teammate Johnson struck out eight and pitched a six-hitter in a 2-0 complete-game victory. Sixty of Schilling’s 80 pitches were strikes.

The Diamondbacks received their World Series rings in a ceremony before the game in front of a sellout crowd 48,042, then made quick work of the Padres, who are 4-20 at Bank One Ballpark since 1998.

Tony Womack singled, drove in two runs with sacrifice flies, and made a leaping grab of Ramon Vazquez’s line drive to end San Diego’s fifth inning. Junior Spivey was three for three with a double and scored twice.

Miller’s fourth career slam capped a seven-run second inning for the Diamondbacks against Brian Tollberg.

Tollberg lasted only 22/3 innings. He gave up nine runs and nine hits, walked three and struck out none.

Sean Burroughs was in the lineup after missing Monday’s opener because of a stomach virus and got his first big-league hit with a leadoff single in the fifth. He also singled in the seventh.
