Local high school boys’ teams sponsored by Nike in 2001-02:
* Crenshaw (10-18)
Forfeited 10 games because of an ineligible player; lost to Fremont in a City Section quarterfinal.
* Santa Monica Crossroads (18-7)
Delphic League champion was upset by St. Paul in second round of Southern Section Division IV-AA playoffs.
* Compton Dominguez (15-13)
With a new coach and no Tyson Chandler, how fast the mighty fell. Defending state champion lost to Westchester, 105-54, and was bounced from Southern Section Division III-AA playoffs by Apple Valley in second round.
* Fairfax (30-5)
Defeated Westchester once, but lost to the Comets three times, including City championship game.
* Glendora (27-3)
Baseline League champion lost to Thousand Oaks in a Southern Section Division I-A semifinal.
* Santa Ana Mater Dei (29-5)*
Won 10th Southern Section championship in 11 years, but was upset by Riverside King in state playoffs.
* Santa Margarita (23-5)
Second behind Mater Dei in the Serra League; lost to Redondo in a Southern Section Division II-A semifinal.
* Bellflower St. John Bosco (24-7)
Lost to Santa Margarita twice and Mater Dei three times, including Southern Section Division II-AA semifinal.
* Westchester (32-2)*
Won second state Division I championship in five years.
