Time to Plant Summer Annuals

As empty spots open up in the garden, fill them with annual bedding plants that will bloom in the summer. Be aware that many annuals at nurseries are spring bloomers and will last only another month at most.

For reliable summer color, consider these annuals for sunny spots: ageratum, alyssum, amaranthus, balsam, celosia, bedding dahlia, annual dianthus, gloriosa daisy, lobelia, marigold, nierembergia, petunia, summer phlox, portulaca, bedding salvia, verbena and zinnia. In the shade, try bedding begonia, caladium, coleus, forget-me-not, mimulus and impatiens.

Garden tour--The listing of spring garden tours in Thursday’s Southern California Living section gave the incorrect day for the Garden Conservancy’s tour of 14 gardens. The event will be held Sunday.

Spring bulbs finish up this month, but don’t be too hasty to cut them. Wait until the leaves turn brown, so the bulbs or corms can store up the energy necessary to bloom next year. Tulips are the exception. They won’t flower next year, so dig them up and toss them out before you can’t remember where they were planted.
