10 Held for Protesting Ban on Dalai Lama

From Times Wire Reports

Russian police detained 10 Buddhists in Moscow for their part in a peaceful protest against the government’s decision to bar the Dalai Lama, Tibet’s spiritual leader, from visiting the country.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said Friday that it would not allow the Dalai Lama to visit in September because it would offend long-standing ally China.

About 30 people gathered at the ministry, holding pictures of the Dalai Lama and signs saying: “Give the Dalai Lama a visa” and “Let our teacher come to Russia.” Police said the protest was unauthorized.
