Box Office Bump

On the Presidents Day weekend after their announcement, best picture nominations gave a boost of more than $1 million to 14 of the 25 nominees over the last five years. (Ranked below by amount of dollar increase.) Seven other films still in release at the time of their nominations (three were long gone) added $150,000 to $800,000. Only one best picture nominee in the last five years saw its gross decline during the post-nominations weekend: “The Thin Red Line” (by $45,000, to $1.87 million).

Among current best picture nominees, “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” has grossed $271.4 million to date; “A Beautiful Mind” has taken in $113.3 million; “Gosford Park,” $22 million; and “In the Bedroom,” $19.3 million. Those four films are still in theaters and certain to receive significant boosts this weekend.

The other best picture contender, “Moulin Rouge,” earned $57.2 million in theaters and so far has amassed more than $70 million in VHS and DVD income.
