Lee Enterprises Agrees to Buy Howard Papers

Newspaper publisher Lee Enterprises Inc. agreed to acquire Howard Publications, a family-owned publisher of 16 daily newspapers in 10 states, for $694million.
The acquisition includes the North County Times in Oceanside and Escondido in San Diego County. Howard newspapers have a total daily circulation of 479,000.
Upon completion of the purchase, Davenport, Iowa-based Lee Enterprises would own 38 daily newspapers and a joint interest in six others. Howard is based in Longview, Wash.
Lee Enterprises shares fell 59 cents to close at $35.09 on the NYSE.
