Land Trust Seeks Donors for Redwoods Purchase

A spectacular 7,400-acre stretch of coastal redwoods slated for logging in Mendocino County is expected to be spared under a purchase plan hatched by a land trust.
But the Mendocino Land Trust is still hunting for donors for the $25.7-million purchase of the trees along Big River, south of Mendocino.
Ken Karlstad, the trust’s executive director, said the group received huge grants from the state and private benefactors, but still needs $1.5 million to close the deal with Hawthorne Timber Co.
