No Wrongdoing Found in Colby’s Death

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District released findings Friday from an investigation into the death of Costa Mesa High football player Matt Colby in September and found no wrongdoing by the coaching staff, medical personnel or administrators.
According to the report, the investigation was left incomplete after Colby’s mother, Kelli Colby, refused to be interviewed and denied authorization to release Colby’s medical history or allow an interview with Dr. Nazli Ahmed, a family physician who examined Colby three days before he collapsed on the sideline during a game against Huntington Beach Ocean View High. He never regained consciousness.
The autopsy report, released in December, said the outside linebacker died from bleeding and swelling in the brain, likely after suffering repeated blows to the head during two previous football games.
