Child Critical After Found Unconscious

An 8-year-old boy was in critical condition Tuesday night after being found unconscious next to a large trash bin behind his family’s home, police and fire officials said.

The boy, whose name was not released, was in surgery late Tuesday at St. John’s Regional Medical Center. He was suffering seizures when firefighters arrived at his California Street home and also sustained a shoulder injury.

The boy had taken the garbage out about noon Tuesday and was found about 15 minutes later by his stepmother, authorities said. Authorities were trying to determine if the boy fell while playing on top of the bin.
